An Affidavit of Single Status may be required of Canadians wishing to wed abroad. It is also known as a Certificate of Freedom to Marry, an Affidavit of No Impediment to Marriage, or an Affidavit of Single Status.

The affidavit of single status is a sworn declaration that attests to the subject’s suitability for marriage. It contains details such the person’s full name, birthdate, present address, and marital status. A commissioner of oaths or notary public must sign the affidavit.

How do I know if I need an Affidavit of Single Status?

Affidavits of single status are required by certain, but not all, foreign governments before enabling a Canadian citizen to get married there. A Canadian embassy or consulate may occasionally demand the affidavit before issuing a marriage license.

If you intend to wed outside of Canada, you should inquire about the necessity of an affidavit of single status from the embassy or consulate of the country where the wedding will take place. To learn out their exact criteria, you should also contact the Canadian embassy or consulate there.

How to Get an Affidavit of Single Status

Some countries have a standard affidavit of single status that you will need to sign in front of a notary and get notarized. You can ask the country’s consulate or embassy if they have a template affidavit.

Once you’ve filled out the single status affidavit, you will need to take it to a notary public or commissioner of oaths to have it witnessed.
