Notary publics are highly skilled and valued members of the legal profession. So, to maintain the highest possible standards within the profession and to ensure that all clients receive quality representation, aspiring Notaries must complete a rigorous training period before they can practice. In total, it can take up to three years to qualify. Let’s break down what’s involved.

Criminal Record Check

Before you can even apply to become a Notary Public in British Columbia, you must pass a criminal record check. To do this, visit your city police detachment or local RCMP station.

If you have any criminal convictions, you will not be able to complete your application.

Evidence of Qualifications

Next, you’ll need to complete your application form. However, before you do, it’s important to understand what qualifications you need.

To apply as a Notary, you will need:

  • A bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA – preferably in law, business, or criminology
  • Evidence of passing a basic accounting course at university level

Preference is given to students who can demonstrate relevant work experience, such as working in a law office or shadowing a Notary Public.

Preliminary Stage

Next, download an application from The Society of Notaries Public of BC. Complete your application and submit it to the Society.

Note that it costs $945.00 to complete an application. If your initial application is successful, you must attend Society interviews to confirm your suitability for the role.

MA in Applied Legal Studies

If the Society approves your application, you must then complete an MA in Applied Legal Studies at Simon Fraser University (SFU). There’s no guarantee that you’ll be accepted by SFU – it’s a competitive process and they only take on a small number of applicants at any one time.

If you’re accepted, it takes 18 months to complete the program.

Complete Your Practical Training

Once you complete the MA in Applied Legal Studies, you then undertake six weeks of practical training with the Society to ensure you’re ready for practice.

If you pass this training stage, congratulations. You can begin work as a Notary Public in British Columbia!
